This is my first facial. What do I need to know and/or do? What happens when I arrive?
Thank you for choosing me! Treatment times are listed for each facial, but for your first appointment, we’ll have a 30-minute consultation added on to discuss your skin, habits and goals. This does not change the start time of your booking. For subsequent appointments, we’ll stick to the designated treatment time, with a few minutes added before or after as needed. To ensure you’re not rushed, it’s best to allow for extra time and avoid scheduling something immediately after your appointment. We’ll go over your skincare needs, and I’ll likely suggest some products or alterations to help improve your routine. Please come makeup free, feel free to skip washing your hair as it may get a little wet and/or oily, and wear something comfy with access to your shoulders. You’ll be covered up with a towel and blanket and I’ll put a headband on to protect your hair and ears. There’ll be a hook for your belongings and storage for anything smaller such as jewellery or your phone.
For additional prep details, check out my pre-procedure advice that is listed with each facial (it’s also in your confirmation booking email!)
Does the consultation include medical history? Do I have to disclose it?
Yes, a facial consultation typically includes a review of your medical history, as it’s important for me to ensure that any treatments or products used are safe and suitable for your skin. During the consultation, I will ask about any underlying skin conditions, allergies, medications, or medical treatments that could impact your facial treatment. It’s essential to disclose any relevant information so I can tailor the treatment to your specific needs and avoid any potential complications.
While you’re not obligated to disclose everything, providing accurate and complete information helps me give you the best possible care and results. Your privacy and comfort are always my priority. Legally I am required to keep all the information you provide confidential and will never share it with anyone without your consent.
I just want a relaxing facial. What do I ask for?
During our consultation, we’ll discuss your goals, and I’ll tailor the treatment to suit your skin’s needs. If you’re seeking a relaxing facial, the treatment may include a soothing mask, gentle exfoliation to refine your skin’s texture, and lymphatic massage targeting your face, neck, shoulders, and optionally your scalp. Extractions are entirely your choice, as they’re not always the most relaxing part of a facial depending on your skin and pain tolerance. If you decide to go ahead with them, I’ll make sure the rest of the treatment feels as calming and restorative as possible. This combination will leave you feeling deeply relaxed and refreshed, with your skin looking brighter and more hydrated! The ideal treatment time is 60 or 90 minutes, depending on your preference.
Will you be able to fix severe acne, hyperpigmentation and congestion?
I can help improve severe acne, hyperpigmentation, and congestion, but it’s important to have realistic expectations. These conditions often require a combination of professional treatments and consistent home care for lasting results. While improvements can take time, I’ll work with you to make your skin healthier and more balanced. In some cases, advanced treatments may be needed, typically provided by a medical professional. My goal is to get you the best results possible before considering more intensive options.
I want glass skin. Can I achieve this?
Achieving “glass skin” is absolutely possible with the right approach. A healthy skin barrier is key, which comes down to the right products, good lifestyle habits, and consistent care. Professional treatments like hydrating and exfoliating facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, and oxygen therapy can all help boost your skin’s radiance and smoothness. Daily sun protection is non-negotiable, and consistency really is everything. Together, we can tailor a plan that gets you closer to that luminous, glass skin glow!
What is purging?
Skin purging is a normal reaction, especially for those with oily or acne-prone skin. It happens when the products used in your treatment speed up your skin’s natural cell turnover. As dead skin sheds more quickly, it can bring oil and bacteria to the surface, causing breakouts. The good news is that purging doesn’t last long, and it’s actually a sign the products are doing their job. Once this phase passes, you’ll be left with clearer, healthier skin. However, if breakouts appear in new areas where you don’t typically get spots, or if the reaction lasts longer than 4 – 6 weeks, feels painful, itchy, or inflamed, it may not be purging – it could be irritation or a reaction. Always reach out if you’re unsure, I’m here to help guide you through it!
What do you use during treatments and how do I know it’ll be good for my skin?
I take pride in using cosmeceutical skincare brands in my treatments, which are scientifically proven to create visible change in the skin. I completely understand any apprehension – you’re not alone in wanting to protect your skin! That’s why I’ve done extensive research on the brands I use, and I’m proud to be certified with Circadia. Their training is among the most comprehensive in the industry, and they have rigorous standards for who can use their products. The beauty of my facial menu is that I tailor everything to your skin’s specific needs – this isn’t a one size fits all approach. You’ll only receive what will truly benefit your skin.
How do I know the at-home products are worth the money?
I completely understand how overwhelming the skincare industry can be – there are so many products and so much conflicting advice. And with the cost of living affecting us all, regardless of income, it’s important to feel confident that what you’re buying is truly worth it. If your current skincare routine is effective, I will not recommend anything unnecessary. My primary focus is on enhancing the health of your skin and fostering a relationship of trust! I want you to feel confident in the treatments and recommendations I provide, knowing that I am always dedicated to what’s best for your individual skin needs. Healthy, glowing skin doesn’t have to come with a high price tag – I’ll always help you find options that suit both your skin and your budget. I trust the Circadia products, and if you feel you’d like to purchase them, I can place an order for you. I don’t keep a fully stocked backbar because I don’t push sales, but I’ll gladly help you get what’s best for your skin if you decide they’re right for you.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation, leaving your skin with a radiant, smooth finish. Using a surgical blade, I carefully remove dead skin cells and vellus hair (aka peach fuzz), from the top layer of the skin.
Will the hair grow back thicker or darker?
After dermaplaning, the hair will grow back at its natural rate and texture, which is typically soft and fine, not thicker or darker. The process doesn’t affect the hair follicle, so it doesn’t change the characteristics of the hair. This would only happen if an esthetician were cutting terminal hair, which shouldn’t occur during dermaplaning. The purpose of dermaplaning is to exfoliate the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of dead skin cells) and remove fine, vellus hair, not to cut terminal hair. Cutting terminal hair can also blunt the blade, which would affect the treatment’s effectiveness.
What if I have naturally thicker darker hair already, genetically or because of my PCOS?
The thicker, darker facial hair often associated with PCOS is caused by an increase in androgens (male hormones), which can result in coarser hair growth. Dermaplaning only removes fine peach fuzz (vellus hair) and does not affect the thicker hormone driven hair. It will not make this hair grow back thicker or darker, but in some cases it may make it appear thicker due to it growing back at an angle. Unlike regular shaving, which removes both fine and thicker hair, dermaplaning only targets the fine, light hairs. For people with PCOS, dermaplaning won’t affect the thicker, darker hair growth, as it doesn’t remove or impact those hairs. It works solely on exfoliating the skin’s surface, leaving the thicker hair (for the most part) untouched. If you’re concerned about thicker hair growth from PCOS, treatments like laser hair removal or prescription medication may be more effective in addressing the underlying cause. There is also anecdotal research that spearmint tea may help reduce excess hair growth in PCOS by lowering free testosterone levels due to its anti androgenic properties! As someone with PCOS, I’ve experienced thick, dark facial hair and have found laser hair removal to be a successful treatment. Dermaplaning now works great for my finer hair!
How will my skin feel after a treatment? Will it be red or painful?
Generally, enzyme treatments are gentle, so there should be minimal to no discomfort. There might be slight redness or mild sensitivity right after, especially if you have sensitive skin, but it usually subsides quickly.
Oxygen RX is usually a soothing treatment, but you may feel some mild tingling or warmth during the procedure. There might be mild redness post-treatment, but it should calm down shortly after.
The skin can feel warm or tingly during the Lactic Acid 35% peel, and there may be redness afterward. Your skin might feel sensitive, and some dryness or mild peeling could occur in the days following the treatment.
The Alpha Beta 40% 15% is a stronger peel that can cause more noticeable redness and tingling during and immediately after the treatment. Your skin may feel very sensitive and dry, with some mild irritation or flakiness in the following days.
Dermaplaning is typically painless, though some may experience mild sensitivity or redness post treatment, and even some very light scabbing if combined with another form of exfoliation. This is completely normal and will heal in a few days. Overall, the skin might feel a little more tender than usual for a short period, but any redness should subside within a few hours.
The firming peptide mask, alongside the other Circadia masks I use are typically gentle and soothing, but if your skin is particularly sensitive, you might experience a mild tingling sensation. There shouldn’t be any pain, and any redness usually fades quickly. This mask creates a unique tightening sensation as it dries – as it sets, it becomes increasingly taut, creating a pulsating or “cracking” sensation as it contracts on the skin. Some describe it as a firm hug for the face, while others notice a slight pulsing or tingling as circulation is stimulated. By the time it’s fully dry, movement may feel restricted, like a second skin, but this temporary tightness is a sign that the mask is actively working! This is left on for 30 minutes, so if you are someone who suffers with restlessness or claustrophobia, this may not be suitable for you.
Nanoneedling or nanoinfusion, unlike traditional microneedling, does not puncture the skin deeply, so you may feel a mild tingling sensation or slight sensitivity during the treatment, but no significant pain. Afterward, your skin might appear slightly flushed, similar to a mild sunburn, but this usually subsides within a few hours.
Buccal intra-oral massage involves deep tissue manipulation inside the mouth, so while some areas may feel tender – especially if you have tight jaw or cheek muscles – most clients describe the sensation as an intense but relieving pressure rather than pain. Post treatment, you might experience mild soreness, similar to what you’d feel after a deep tissue massage, but this fades quickly.
Are the products cruelty free and fragrance free?
Circadia combines plant extracts, antioxidants, peptides, and vitamins to nourish, protect, and repair the skin, all while being fragrance free, ethically sourced, and vegan.
Do I have to pay extra for scalp massage?
Nope! Scalp massage is included as part of the lymphatic work I do. I don’t just focus on the face; I include the muscles and lymphatic pathways across the head, neck, and shoulders too. It’s part of the treatment because it’s both therapeutic and feels amazing! If you’d like a little more focus on the scalp, just mention it during your consultation or drop me a message beforehand, and I’ll tailor it for you.
How many treatments are necessary?
The number of treatments you’ll need will vary based on your skin’s individual needs, and during your consultation, I will provide personalised recommendations. Just like with fitness, consistent care over time yields the best results! While we may not always see dramatic changes after one session, you can always expect to leave feeling glowing, refreshed, well cared for – and maybe a bit sleepy! In plain terms, one facial isn’t going to magically give you perfect skin, but it’s a step towards long term skin health!
I understand the financial pressures many of us face, and it’s important to me that you feel comfortable with your skincare journey. I will never recommend treatments or products that are outside of your budget. My focus will always be on helping you achieve your skincare goals with realistic, manageable at home care that aligns with your lifestyle.
